Best of Lola Shotguns
Lola    Issue #14

By Michelle Kasprzak

This year the Contemporary Art Forum in Kitchener had a theme: Power to the People. "P2P" by the Gorbets, was one of the most interesting pieces of the show. It consisted of a marquee of light bulbs installed at Kitchener City Hall and a switch panel on a nearby sidewalk. Each switch controlled one corresponding bulb on the marquee. The switch panel was an open invitation of freedom of expression extended to the general public, and it proved to be an interesting social experiment. Some engaged in competitive games with each other, "chasing" each other around the marquee; others chose to write their name, or word slogans ("Peace," "H", "F U", "Weed", etc.), or draw small pictures. Some messages were indecipherable or benign, others caused a few raised eyebrows. This installation was fun to interact with, and it was just as fun to watch others interacting with it, which is a rare experience indeed.
