Opening the box reveals "shelves", each containing a "page" with two parts: an element of design on one side, and a principle of design on the other. Opening the pages reveals an illustration of the concept, plus a few words about that element or principle of design. The pages are built from cut paper, and are illuminated from behind when they are pulled out for viewing. The switch for illumination is on the back.
